A Wildlife Lover’s South Africa

south africa smallSouth Africa, a paradise filled with elephants on land and whales close to the shore, and the most thrilling adventures; from riding ostriches to cage-diving with the great white sharks.

Number one on our itinerary, the Knysna Elephant Park, a free-range sanctuary where rescued elephants thrive at the park, wandering and browsing as they would in the wild. Visitors may get a chance of getting close, but only if elephants' allow it. There are also overnight stays at the Elephant Lodge, with spectacular views.

Next we go to the Garden Route's coast, where our gentle sea giants roam. At the Robberg Beach you can see exhilarating acrobatics from southern right whales. Want to get even closer? Try whale-watching trips via boat, at Plettenberg Bay. If you’re traveling in October, be sure to catch the Hermanus Whale Festival, a celebration made especially for the whales’ return to Walker Bay.

Now we move on to the adrenaline pumping part of our trip, first stop, the ostrich ride. This may be the weirdest thing you have ever heard of, much less done, but really wouldn’t it be exhilarating? In South Africa, ostrich are not an endangered animal and if you visit the Cango Ostrich Farm, you’ll learn all about them and be able to get up close and personal. However, if you wish to ride an ostrich you have to weigh less than 65 kilos.

Last but not least, the face to face encounter with the greatest terror of the sea; the great white shark! In order to cage-dive, you don’t need to be a certified diver. All you need to do is stand in a cage attached to the side of a boat. Pretty easy right? Now, imagine having a great white shark bump the cage you are standing in, trying to breach over and over again as it jumps after an attached bait. A true adventure that will thrill you to the core!

So there you have it, South Africa, a land filled with many close encounters with such regal wildlife, a true animal lover’s paradise.
