Know your Top Brain Foods

Brain FoodDo you know what are the “brain” foods that will keep our brain happy?

The brain, just like your heart, lungs or muscles, requires certain nutrients. Lately, research has been showing that you can increase your brain’s health if you add certain "brain" foods to your daily diet.

  1. Beets: Every organ needs a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to function at full capacity. Beets regulate your heartbeat, hence improving your blood flow.
  2. Broccoli: A great source of vitamin K, known to enhance cognitive function and improve brain power.
  3. Fish: Fatty fish (i.e: salmon or sardines) contain a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids that maintain brain cell health.
  4. Lean protein:  Chicken and turkey breast, eggs and low-fat milk & yogurt are excellent sources of vitamin B12 which is important to improve cognitive skills.
  5. Walnuts:  A great source of alpha-linolenic acid (a plant-based form of omega-3), walnuts have been associated with better memory scores and cognitive function.
  6. Pumpkin seeds: Just a handful of pumpkin seeds a day gives you your recommended daily amount of zinc, a necessity for enhancing your memory and thinking skills.
  7. Berries: Berries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins which help prevent brain cell breakdown.
  8. Coffee: Caffeine can temporarily sharpen focus. It is alright in the morning and noon, but avoid it after that so it doesn't interfere with your sleep.
  9. Chocolate: Tastiest brain food of all! Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, and also improves focus and concentration. Milk chocolate, improves memory and reaction time.
  10. Water: Since your body is made mostly of water, a mild case of dehydration can reduce your mental energy and capacity, causing your memory to become impaired. You should drink at least four liters of water each day, or six to eight glasses.
